SDI Key Clients and Business Overview

The SDI Business Unit (BU) is led by Neil Timms. Within the BU there are five sectors focused on specific SDI client needs as well the Cyber Security BU that supports our clients across the UK.  We work across the UK with many members working on client site. The main office bases for SDI are Leatherhead, Reading, Chippenham, Gloucester and Bristol but we are looking to expand in the North and Scotland to ensure we are close to clients there too.

The work in the SDI BU is exciting and we are a true systems integrator. We work tirelessly to advise, build and operate bespoke technically complex, mission-critical information systems which help our clients keep society safe and secure.

We bring innovation to our clients using proven and emerging technologies, agile delivery processes and our deep expertise across the breadth of space, defence, intelligence, aerospace and maritime in the UK and Australia, all underpinned by our end-to-end cyber capability. We work collaboratively with global technology companies, cutting edge SMEs and academia to deliver optimal solutions for each client.

We recruit and develop local talent and our 1,500 members engage with clients to support local schools, communities and the environment with the aim of making a positive difference.  We really do care.  We believe that when we look after our members, our clients and our communities, we have a sustainable successful business.

Many of the programmes we work in across the SDI BU are ‘secure’ in that we can’t share details on them, but some Case Studies/Clients include:

Ministry of Defence (MOD)

We have worked with the UK MOD for over 40 years and work on projects across the RAF, British Army, StratCom and the Royal Navy to deliver mission-critical information systems.

  • We support the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) to trial cutting edge technology such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning in real world scenarios
  • We are developing software for the UK’s Space Operations Centre to support space domain awareness and keep the UK’s space assets safe
  • We are supporting the MOD’s digitisation of healthcare
  • We are installing CGI OpenSea360, a Maritime Mission System for sub 24m high-speed craft into state-of-the-art high-speed patrol craft for the UK Royal Navy
  • We are the prime software contractor for Skynet 5, the UK’s military satcom system.

UK Space Agency and European Space Agency

We have been working with the European Space Agency since 1974 and have supported the missions of over 225 satellites.

  • We are defining the Payload Data Ground System for the Traceable Underpinning Terrestrial and Helio-Studies (TRUTHS) satellite. TRUTHS is an important climate mission to enable in-flight calibration of Earth Observation (EO) satellites. TRUTHS will help deliver improved confidence in Earth Observation data gathered from space and the critical forecasts driven by this data.
  • We are working with the University of Leicester to develop a new wildfire mapping service that combines recent advances in Earth Observation, Artificial Intelligence and cloud computing to help better map and monitor the impact of wildfires.
  • We are developing an innovative 5G facility at the European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications at the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire. This 5G Hub will enable the development and acceleration of potential use cases and demonstrate the benefits of hybrid 5G and satellite communications networks.
  • We are developing an innovative Artificial Intelligence enabled platform and a series of solutions for the global satellite communications marketplace as part of the Autonomous Satcom Solutions programme.
  • We are developing a GNSS Event Notification Service capable of monitoring the UK GNSS spectrum to enable effective alerting and reporting of Position Navigation and Time disruption.

 

We also work with commercial organisations and Industry Primes.
